MMUST Makes Its Mark at the Standard Media Group PLC Career Fair

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) left an indelible impression at the Standard Media Group PLC Career Fair, held from 23rd to 24th February, 2024 at Sarit Centre, Nairobi. The career fair, themed, ‘Booked for Life’ aimed to guide students in making informed career choices as they embark on their higher education journey. The annual event targeted the large number of students who, for lack of information and guidance, face hurdles while applying for courses after high school. The event attracted higher education stakeholders and top employers, providing a platform for MMUST to connect with leading companies and engage potential students.  

The MMUST team was led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Planning Research and Innovation, Prof. Charles Mutai who was flanked by the Director Corporate Communications and Marketing, Dr. Lydia Anyonje. One of the highlights of MMUST’s participation was the unveiling of our programmes and a diverse range of research projects undertaken by students and staff from different faculties. The projects, ranging from sustainable energy solutions to healthcare innovations, garnered attention and admiration regarding MMUST’s creativity and potential impact as a University.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Charles Mutai expressed optimism about MMUST’s programmes, saying that they had attracted many international students. He pointed out that MMUST’s academic performance and outreach are centered around quality research.

“We have students from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia. The programmes we offer, are indeed for both our international clientele, and local students.  MMUST looks forward to participating in such careers fairs even if they are held in any of these countries,” he stated.

In exclusive interviews with Spice FM 94.4 FM and the Vybez radio, both of the Standard Media Group, Dr. Anyonje emphasized MMUST’s commitment to providing high quality education through its accredited programmes. She highlighted the University’s attractive and unique programmes in technical, medical and social sciences such as Optometry and Vision Science, Paramedical Sciences, as well as Mortuary Science.

“MMUST is committed to providing high quality education through teaching, research and innovation. All our programs are accredited by relevant bodies including the Commission for University Education (CUE),” said Dr. Anyonje.

The career fair also featured insightful discussions by other participating institutions. One Dr. Caroline Kawila Kyalo, the CoD- Health System Management in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), addressed the prevalent challenges faced by graduate students in accessing job opportunities. She advised students to adopt a proactive approach by engaging in available opportunities as they build their skills progressively.  

Notably, Ms. Susan Limoh, the Principal for Nairobi West Hospital College emphasized the scarcity of individuals with integrity, asserting that employers are actively seeking individuals whose values transcend conventional norms. Ms. Limoh challenged the participants to build on such values, as employers prioritize those with strong moral compass and integrity in their recruitment of staff.

Speaking on availability of opportunities abroad, Ms. Judith Kato, the Sales Manager- East Africans Study in Germany revealed that Kenya has the highest population of individuals pursuing their studies and employment out of the country compared to Uganda and Tanzania. Underscoring the significance of education as a factor for career progression, Ms. Kato pointed out that continuous learning and acquiring of relevant qualifications are indispensable for anyone aspiring to advance in their chosen field.

Other notable panelists included MMUST’s Marketing Officer, Mr. James Muriithi; Eng. Laura Airo, Consultant at East Africans Study in Germany; and Mr. Ronald Mahondo, CEO of MaraMoja Transport. Their insights added great relevance to the event, enriching discussions and offering valuable insights into the evolving job market dynamics.

Attending such events presents a platform for the University to widen its collaborations with leading employers.  This not only contributes to the elevation of the institution’s reputation as a hub of innovation and excellence in higher education but also provides students with real-time information about MMUST. As MMUST continues to chart its path towards academic and professional excellence, its success at the career fair serves as a testament to the University’s unwavering commitment to empowering students and driving socio-economic development through education and innovation.
