MMUST and the County Government of Kakamega Host the 3rd Edition of the Standard Chartered Bank Virtual Marathon

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in collaboration with the County Government of Kakamega has today 27 October 2023 hosted the 3 edition of the Standard Chartered Bank Virtual Marathon. The race, themed  was graced by the Governor of Kakamega County H.E FCPA Fernandes Barasa and the Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo. The Standard Chartered Bank donated 700 trees for planting during this event. The Marathon is the country’s biggest single-day sporting event, and beyond running, it has impacted countless lives through the funds raised in entry fees.

The Vice Chancellor awarded the winners and top runners who participated in various races. He applauded the Standard Chartered Bank for consistently organizing this sustainable marathon and for  cultivating a sporting culture within Kenya. “This marathon promotes the Presidential Directive of promoting the Green Economy. It also inspires young athletes to pursue their dreams and showcasing our nation's extraordinary running talent,” said Prof. Shibairo.

All the races started at MMUST and ended at Bukhungu Stadium. A number of students living with disabilities from MMUST participated. The event was coordinated at the University by the University Outreach Coordinator, Dr. Issah Kweyu. The University has a partnership with the Bank dubbed ‘Future Makers programme’.  The programme was launched in 2019 and is aimed at tackling inequality and encouraging economic inclusion for the younger generation.

Speaking during the event, the Regional Manager, Standard Chartered Bank - Mr. Gabriel Ochieng noted that Standard Chartered Bank is committed to making the marathon most sustainable globally. He pointed out that the marathon attracted over 1000 participants. Some of the students were sponsored by the County Government of Kakamega and while others were supported by the MMUST. Mr. Ochieng revealed that the bank utilized the opportunity to create 60 bank accounts for students out of which the first 40 will be awarded a 500 shillings voucher.

The Marathon brings together athletes from diverse backgrounds, races, gender and promotes inclusivity with its PWD race category.
