Dr. Erick Ater Onyango

Erick Ater Onyango is a Lecturer, Consultant and Social Policy expert with over 13 years Child Protection and Social protection programming experience. He served as Senior Children’s Officer and Head of Research Unit at the Directorate of Children’s Services under the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection in Kenya. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Sociology from Rongo University, holds Master of Arts Degree in Sociology with specialization in Social Development and Management from Maseno University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree( Sociology)  from the University of Nairobi. He has attended many programmatic management courses and Conferences in Kenya and abroad including the Senior Management Course at the Kenya School of Government. He specializes in Social Policy core areas including Child Protection, Gender studies, Programme management, Counter trafficking in persons, Alternative Family care Strategies among others where his research interests lies- His two thesis focused on, informal alternative family care for children wellbeing and child participation in drought mitigation activities. He has 2 years management experience on restoring family links as a tracing expert in emergencies for IDPS and refugees with the Kenya Red Cross Society and the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC). He also has over a decade experience on welfare, reintegration and rehabilitation programs in Kenya’s Correctional Institutions (both Prisons & Children Institutions). Erick is a career researcher, consultant and facilitating trainer in social policy with interests in the Vulnerable Populations, well versed with research methods and data analysis, legal instruments and has 13 Publications in Peer Review Journals. He is a champion in real time data management having overseen the roll out of the Child Protection information Management system (CPIMS) in Kenya. Erick is a member of the Australia Sociological Association, served as an Ambassador with the Global Social Service Workforce Alliance and is Research Associate at the Africa Institute of Child Studies. He is a National researcher in social policy and child protection focus for Maestral Intl. projects in Kenya. Erick is a reviewer with the Elsevier editorial system in the Child Abuse & Neglect the International Journal. Erick chaired two thematic committee’s working on Violence against Children (VAC) study and VAC response Plan 2018 in Kenya. He is also the interim assessment coordinator for TVET-CDAC child protection courses in Kenya having developed level 6, 5 & 4 Child Protection curriculum and assessment tools for the Kenyan Government (CEDAC)
