Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s 2nd-year international student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Zachariah Kuir Mapor, has published a poetry book titled, ‘Awakening Junub Switching on the Offed Lights’. The book, which is now available for purchase, depicts the challenges facing his home Country-South Sudan, including tribalism, corruption, and other social injustices. The talented poet and enthusiast of linguistic-based art, who is also known as ‘Significant Quir Mapor’, has not only highlighted issues affecting South Sudan, but also proposed innovative solutions that can be applied in other African Countries. Released on South Sudan’s Independence Day, this book is a call to action for the next generation of leaders to steer their respective nations towards a brighter future.

“I believe this book will not only impact South Sudan but also resonate well with other African Countries facing similar issues,” says Mapor. He began working on this book while studying at MMUST, after completing his Primary and Secondary school education in South Sudan. Mapor hopes that ‘Awakening Junub’ will guide the youth to think and act differently, breaking free from the cycle of corruption and division.

Aside from his latest book, Mapor has penned ‘Tales of Love’, showcasing his versatility as a writer, and is currently working on his third collection, ‘Campus Chronicles’, which promises to captivate readers with its unique perspective on University life.
