On Monday 10th January, 2022, the MMUST Dean of Students, Dr. Bernadette Abwao, led a team from the Sports Office to present trophies collected at the Championships to the Vice Chancellor, Prof.Solomon Shibairo and other members of the University Management Board and staff in the Vice Chancellor’s Boardroom.

Prof.Solomon Shibairo commended the teams for making the University proud and displaying great discipline during the championships.

“Be disciplined sports people but do not lose focus on your academics. If you want to remain at the top, you have to sharpen your skills,” said Prof.Shibairo.

The Vice Chancellor said that students’ welfare is a top priority and that is why the University provides talent scholarships for its needy students and boosts the students’ kitty yearly. He also cited projects such as the establishment of a new students’ centre in collaboration with the University’s Alumni Association and an internal project meant to develop a soccer and rugby field with a running track in the University grounds.

The DVC in charge of Planning, Research and Innovation (PRI), Prof. Charles Mutai urged the sports team to continue marketing the University and stay committed to their sportsmanship.

“We are committed to support and do what we can to ensure that you continue to excel,” said Prof. Mutai.

The Dean of Students, Dr. Bernadette Abwao and the men’s handball, athletics and tennis coach, Mr. Barasa Geoffrey reiterated that the University Management has immensely supported the teams despite limited resources. Dr. Abwao added that it takes great sacrifice to ensure that the students get good results.

“Results do not come easily,” said the Dean of Students.

The women’s soccer, hockey, netball and scrabble teams clinched the first positions together with the men’s scrabble team while the women’s handball and badminton came in at second positions together with the men’s netball team. On the other hand, the women’s chess team and men’s handball team came in at third positions. The Table Tennis and Tennis teams also secured positions amongst the top ten teams while the athletics teams received gold and silver medals.

The teams are trained by; Barasa Geoffrey (Handball men, Athletics, Tennis), Shisoka Akaka (Handball women, Netball men, Scrabble, Chess), Selphine Muyonga (Soccer women), Timothy Ondeko (Hockey women, Netball men), Hellen Sinoya (Netball men and women), Ashiali Victor (Hockey women) and Patrick Kukubo (Badminton men and women).
