Speaking during the event, the UASU Vice Chair, Dr. Lusweti, thanked the University for financing the initiative and making it a success. “The University’s role is not only to teach but also participate in research and community service. Through such initiatives, MMUST is able to carry out community-oriented research aimed at solving problems affecting the society,” reiterated Dr. Lusweti.

She further informed the participants that the University has partnered with Hamisi local Community based organizations, who will continue to make follow ups and give health, environmental and personal hygiene talks to prevent further jigger invasions.

Notably, Dr. Humphrey Agevi, stated that the project is aimed at educating and encouraging the community on the importance of hygiene. He emphasized that jiggers are instigated by poor hygiene therefore there is need to adopt good hygiene practices. “As a union, we will stand to champion for the rights of workers at the University while at the same time giving back to the community,” added Dr. Agevi. The Union has put in place a Monitoring and Evaluation tool that will be used to monitor and evaluate the CSR activities undertaken for sustainability and success.

While addressing the media, the Organizing Secretary, Mr. Phillip Amuyunzu, said that the jigger infection may lead to mental health problems and disability, limiting individuals’ ability to fend for themselves as the elderly are affected the most. “The Union has shifted its focus from politics to community service. Today, we have served more than 100 people and still expect more,” he said. Mr. Amuyunzu requested the County government of Vihiga and the Ministry of Health to join them in the Anti-Jigger campaign.
