MMUST NEWLY ELECTED STUDENT COUNCIL SHARPEN THEIR SKILLS THROUGH AN INDUCTION SESSION IN LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE

While officially opening the training, the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo congratulated the student leaders for winning their respective positions to become the elected MMUSO leaders. He further urged them to practice responsible leadership and create a balance between their leadership and academics. Prof. Shibairo assured the student leadership of the University Management support in solving the issues concerning comrades.

“We are aware of the insecurity cases that have occurred in the past and we are determined to ensure that students are safe. The University is closely working with the County Government of Kakamega and the National Police Service to make sure that security lights are erected in areas prone with insecurity cases and police posts established in the regions. I would like to encourage you to work with us in combating issues affecting students. In leadership, dialogue is key. Our offices are open for you to come and share with us on how we can make students’ life even better,” said Prof. Shibairo

The Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic and Student Affairs (DVC ASA), Prof. Peter Odera, addressed matters of coping as a University student as far as finances, relationships, and academics are concerned. He said that the student leaders elected should know that they are role models to the rest of the students.  He called upon the MMUSO leaders to carry themselves in a manner that will inspire and influence other students positively.

“As a leader, you need to be an extrovert. Share your experiences with others and discuss issues with other leaders. Through this you will be able to learn more and amicably solve problems that might be affecting your people,” he said.

Speaking during the training, the Ag. Registrar Academics, Prof. Thomas Sakwa, concurred with the earlier speakers reiterating that student leaders play a very important role in bridging the gap between the University Management and the entire student body.     The other notable members of Management present during the training were Prof. John Muoma (representing the Deputy Vice Chancellor Planning Research and Innovation), Dr. Rev. Fr. Kizito Muchanga and Ms. Stella Kabuga.
