MMUST STAFF RETIREMENT BENEFITS SCHEME HOLDS DEBATE AHEAD OF TOMORROW’S TRUSTEE ELECTIONS

According to Dr. Fred Lisouza, a member of the debate’s planning committee, the event was organized with the permission of the Universities' Academic Staff Union (UASU) MMUST chapter leadership and the candidates.

During the debate, candidates were given time to introduce themselves to the audience. Thereafter, they were asked questions to establish whether they understood the roles and responsibilities of a trustee; the qualities of a good trustee; how well they can handle issues in the Scheme such as mismanagement, embezzlement of funds or issues of record keeping; how to ensure that members get value for their money through investments; mitigating risks in the Scheme and where they see the Scheme in the next five (5) years.

Giving closing remarks, UASU-MMUST Secretary General, Dr. Benard Omogo, said that the Chapter was very happy with the initiative and hoped to have debates in all upcoming elections. He also proposed to have funds allocated towards the same. The members of the committee that organized this debate included Prof. John Muoma (Convener), Dr. Fred Lisouza, Mr. Laban Onega, Dr. Catherine Aurah, Dr. Edwin Kanda, Dr. Robert Egessa, Dr. Isabella Kiprono and UASU SG- Dr. Benard Omogo. The moderators were: Mr. Oscar Waswa (lead moderator), Dr. Mary Nelima and Dr. Peter Nandikove.
