The aim of the inspection was to establish the conformity of the Universities to the standards and guidelines governing medical and dental schools in the East African Community with a view of improving the services and promotion of the harmonization of Education and training in the region. The key areas scrutinized included Governance and Management, Academic Programs, Human Resource, Student Affairs, Infrastructure, Monitoring and Evaluation of programs, Research and Innovation. The joint team interacted with University Management, Teaching Hospital Management, Academic Staff and students.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, School of Medicine, scored Fifty-Three (53) out of the available one-hundred (100) points. Therefore, the school has PARTIALLY COMPLIED with the Regional Guidelines for Inspection and Recognition of Medical Schools in EAC Partner States.
The EAC recommended that Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, School of Medicine should ensure that the new admissions for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme (MBChB) for the year 2020/2021 are undertaken only upon fulfilment of the specific recommendations of the East African Community, Regional Guidelines for Inspection and Recognition of Medical Schools and Teaching Hospitals in EAC Partner States. The University Management was tasked to submit evidence of allocation of more financial resources to support the School of Medicine, improve its physical infrastructure in particular the staff offices, classrooms, laboratories and hostels.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council is directed to re-inspect the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, School of Medicine to ascertain compliance with the recommendations of the inspection team and thereafter report the progress to the Joint EAC Partner National Medical and Dental Councils within six (6) months. The verdict therefore is that Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, School of Medicine meets the minimum requirements for training of medical/dental students as provided in the East African Community, Regional Guidelines for Inspection and Recognition of Medical Schools and Teaching Hospitals in EAC Partner States. Therefore upon qualification MMUST’s graduates SHALL BE ELIGIBLE for reciprocal recognition within the EAC Partner States as set out in the Mutual Recognition Agreement.
