 Mr. Herman J. Wachiye, Gender Officer Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology established the gender office in July 2007 by appointing the Gender officer. The primary role of this office is to mainstream gender in policies, plans and programmes at the University.
Activities
The Gender office will diligently work to accomplish its mandate by;
Sustaining a gender sensitization programme at the University by organizing workshops and other relevant forums
Constantly conducting baseline surveys at the University, so as to identify gender gaps
Developing a gender policy for the University to guide decision-making with regard to addressing gender issues at the University.
Besides this, the office has the mandate to specifically undertake the following
- Identify gender concerns, needs, priorities, constraints and opportunities within the University for the promotion of gender equality
- Ensure that gender needs, concerns and priorities are integrated into the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the University policies and programmes at all levels
- Conduct gender analysis to assess the impact of development on men and women and design strategies to mitigate the negative impact of development on women.
- Coordinate the collection, analysis and updating of relevant sex disaggregated data within the sector for development planning and programming.
- Develop gender sensitive performance indicators to monitor the progress of gender equality and women empowerment. .
- Identify capacity needs and design appropriate sector specific capacity building programmes.
- Establish public/private partnerships to support gender mainstreaming.
- Develop annual work plans for gender mainstreaming in line with the Ministry of Education strategic plan, policies and programmes.
- Develop monitoring and evaluation tools to assess the progress and impact of gender mainstreaming and prepare progress reports on a quarterly basis to the Ministry of Gender and Children and the Ministry of Education.
- Actively participate in the sector-based budget process, to ensure adequate resources are allocated for gender mainstreaming work.
Future Plans
The office will facilitate for the establishment of an Institute of Gender and Family Studies at the University, which will offer Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate and Graduate programmes.
