Reference & Information Services
One of the key functions of the library is to provide answers to questions relating to the library and its collection. The library has a number of trained staff who are at hand to assist users with quick reference enquiries, searching and locating library sources for project work and research topics.

Assistance is also provided on the use of CD-ROM databases, OPAC and other electronic information sources. An index and digital database of newspapers and journals available in the library is maintained in an electronic database to facilitate access.

Current Awareness

This service is responsible for the provision of information on current events and redevelopments in the library. This is done through the use of emails, adverts, photocopies and other means of repackaging. The respective publicity materials are placed in strategic places to attract the attention of users. Lists and graphical images of new materials are usually sent by emails of published in the library and university newsletters for publicity.

Inter-library Loan

The library offers this service on the realization that no library in the world can meet all the demands of its users. Following requests made through the reference librarian, materials are borrowed from other libraries to be used by our users.

Catalogues

More than 30 computer terminals in the library have an offline catalogue database which the users can use to browse the library catalogue. The catalogues are available in three different software namely, Procite, MS Excel, and MS Access to allow users to select the programme they are most proficient in.

Reservation
Users are allowed to reserve books that are currently not available either because they have been lent out or they are undergoing the bindery and restoration process.

Indexing/Abstracting

The library has created several databases besides the catalogue to facilitate access to information in newspapers, journals, magazines. The Library also has an index of digital images that capture special events, functions and personalities in the university.

Circulation Services

Borrowing

Borrowing from the library is subject to Library Rules and Regulations. All informational materials except those designated as Reference, National, Special, Periodicals, Audio-Visual and digital Collection may be borrowed for use outside the library. Items for loan are borrowed at the Issue Desks of the main library, short loan section and the Star Annex Library. Fines are levied on readers who fail to return materials within the stipulated loan period.

Long and Short Loan

At the Issue Desk users can borrow books on either long or short loan. Materials on long loan are lent for 14 days for undergraduates and 1 month for lectures and postgraduate students. Materials on short loan are lent for 2 hours or overnight use.

National/Special Collection
This section has information materials on Kenya, by Kenyans and/or any other author, about Kenya. materials include: government publications, theses and dissertations, novels, bound newspapers and any other information materials on the people, land, climate etc., of Kenya. It is open to academic staff, graduate students and other researchers. Other materials include united nations and world bank publications and rare materials.

Coordinating practical attachments offered by the library to students from various institutions.

Children's' Library

The library has a children's section which is housed within the main library. The collection in this area is for children age up to 16 years and is mostly used by children of the university staff and other children from the surrounding community. Services provided include: borrowing, reading, computer games, story telling, audio and video sessions. Services are absolutely free but the children can only borrow materials through their respective parents.
