VICE CHANCELLOR’S ADDRESS DURING THE BURIAL SERVICE OF PROF. GEORGE ESHIWANI AT MULWANDA HOME ON SATURDAY, 18 APRIL 2015

The Widows, Children and family of the Late Prof. George Eshiwani, The Governor, Kakamega County, H.E Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, Senators and Members of the Political wing, Distinguished Members of the Academia, Fellow mourners, Good morning! First, allow me to express my heartfelt condolences to you all following the passing on of Prof. Eshiwani. On behalf of the University Council, staff and students of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, kindly accept our condolences. Today we stand here unified in grief to pay tribute and celebrate a man who made a mark on all of us present. Prof. Eshiwani was a passionate lobbyist and careful strategist without whose resilience and effort we would never have Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. We, MMUST, will forever be indebted to his extraordinary foresight that led to the establishment of the University. Prof. Eshiwani served as MMUST University Council Chairman from 1999 to 2001, a period in which WECO was converted into a constituent college of Moi University. He was a focused leader who nurtured many staff and students during his tenure and greatly contributed to the development of MMUST. His achievements are not confined to MMUST only. Before us today lays a man who was after his own heart. Everything he set out to do was accomplished in record time. It reminds me that you do not, of necessity, have to go to an institution of higher learning to be a guru in the school of life. If we carefully turn the pages of Prof. Eshiwani’s life, we discover and appreciate that he was the epitome of elegance, a grand master to boot. Allow me to quote Abraham Lincoln, ‘It is not the years in your life that count. It is the life in the years you have lived.’ Indeed, Prof. Eshiwani lived his life to the fullest and touched many lives. As we lay him to rest, history will remember him as the son of the soil who made a nondescript Kakamega town come to life with the entry of a University. Today, many of our sons and daughters, who would never have had the opportunity to enter the gates of a university, can now step into MMUST and acquire further education. He knew how to provide the nets for fishing. Prof. Eshiwani’s sudden demise has been a shock not only to his immediate family but to us in the academia who always relied upon his wise counsel. It is especially a major blow for the MMUST fraternity who still counted on his support. It is in this vein that we have decided to name our Science Laboratory after this great Mathematician, in his honour and remembrance. Fare thee well Professor. God bless you. God bless Prof. Eshiwani’s family. God bless Kenya. Prof. F.A.O Otieno Vice Chancellor, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology P.O Box 190-50100 Kakamega, Kenya Tel.
