The advancement of the world with respect to the growth of science and technology, calls for highly skilled professionals to meet the growing standards. This is even more crucial in health and its related sciences. Changes in the dynamics of the world’s population suggest the need for eye care to increase in the future.

The MMUST Department of Optometry and Vision Science is the first and only Optometric training programmes in Kenya and the entire eastern African region to run an undergraduate programme leading to B.Sc. (Optometry) degree. The Department started in May 2009 under the School of Heath Science with six (6) students admitted into the programme as pioneers. Now, the Department is boastful of having a total of over 110 undergraduate students spread from first to fourth year.

The Department has well equipped and newly constructed Pre-clinic and Dispensing laboratory with state-of-the-art ophthalmic equipment for the clinical training of the students. Pre-clinic runs on a large pedal to provide specialized training in Contact lens, Physiological Optics and clinical concentration. The Department also had aspired to have an e-learning library. The Department is heavily supported in a chain of ophthalmic equipment as well as human resource by Brien Holden Vision Institute, Australia.

The Department of Optometry and Vision Science is committed to training students to the highest level of proficiency, integrity and professionalism, preparing students to practice at the leading edge of this rapidly evolving health care profession. Community eye health forms a strong part of our curriculum and our graduates will recognize their role as primary eye-care practitioners.
