• Ladies and Gentlemen,

I greet you all.

It is my pleasure to have this opportunity and sincerely thank His Excellency, the Governor of Busia County, Mheshimiwa Sospeter Ojaamong for his hospitality by hosting and allowing us, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, expand to this County. We also appreciate your continued support to us. It must be noted that your County Government played a very big role in sponsoring our 9th Graduation Ceremony which was held in December last year.

The launch of the MMUST Busia Town Campus is a concrete move by the University in accordance with our mission which is to generate, preserve and disseminate knowledge. We wish to disseminate this knowledge in science and technology by offering quality programmes covering a wide variety of disciplines. We look forward to achieving this by engaging with the Government of Kenya, the community and other stakeholders.

As we strengthen our academic programmes, the University is determined to ensure that the people of Busia County quench their thirsty for higher education especially to those of whom travelling to the Main Campus has been a challenge. We are here for you. At MMUST, we will reach you even as you reach us. We have enough resources and qualified staff who are ready and willing to impart knowledge to the people of Busia. We also hope that students from the neighbouring countries will join this Campus because Busia Town is easily accessible.

Ladies and Gentlemen, there is good news for members of KNUT from Busia County. Last year, the University signed an MOU with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) with an aim of not only improving the quality of education in the country but also opening up more opportunities for teachers and their families to advance with their studies. We wish to encourage Busia County teachers to take advantage of the provisions of this MoU which offers a 15% discount in fees payable to the University for a teacher, his spouse and children.

At this point, I would like to make a special request to investors in Busia County. We urge you all to build good and better hostels that will cater for our students and bridge the gap in accommodation. The presence of the MMUST Busia Campus in this County, we believe, will be a major step towards achieving our development goals, not just in Busia but in the East African region. We also look forward to acquiring land in Busia town and setting up a permanent base for MMUST which base will propel itself to a constituent college and eventually a university.

In conclusion, I want to thank all those who made this occasion a success. We are now able to see Busia County in a broader MMUST way. We commit to fostering education by maintaining quality standards and working with the County Government and other stakeholders. Let us, therefore, go out and chase our dreams knowing very well that individual successes will benefit the society as a whole. I wish you all the best in your endeavours.

God bless You. God Bless Busia County. God Bless Kenya.

Thank you.
