Prof. Olli Vainio, University of Oulu,

All the Deans present,

Participants from Next Step Universities,

Invited Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening!

I take this opportunity to thank you for availing yourselves from your busy schedules to participate in this intensive course that was geared towards human capacity building and a holistic approach to Health issues.

Indeed, I hope that the time and resources that you have invested in this programme will not only be beneficial to you as individuals but will be cascaded to benefit the society at large. Interprofessional Education has in the past generated considerable interest and debate. There have been different schools of thought about the importance of Interprofessional Education.

It is however, important to note that, an IPE curriculum is designed to promote understanding, appreciation and application of roles, talents and responsibilities of the members of the health care team. This curriculum will for sure help you to realize your objectives and carry out your mandate as competent health care givers.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we all appreciate that for a long time, there have been misconceptions about health care givers which need to be corrected. I take the earliest opportunity to call upon all Universities represented here today, to mainstream this programme in their institutions Health Education curriculum. Allow me to inform you that we at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology are a step ahead as we have already integrated Public Relations unit for our students in the School of Health Sciences.

Ethical and Intercultural issues as outlined in the IPE curriculum will help you in establishing a good rapport between you and fellow health care institutions, you and your clients and other stakeholders in the Health sector.

It is my sincere hope that after the training and ideas exchanged here over the past few days, we shall go back to our various stations re-energized to improve service delivery.

Allow me to most sincerely thank the sponsors of this project; The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs NSS programme and The University of Oulu, Finland. I also appreciate all the NEXT STEP Universities represented here from across the globe, without whose presence this forum would not have been a success. ASANTENI SANA!

My final message to you as you go to your various destinations is to put into practice all the knowledge that you have acquired here and transform the lives of the persons whom you interact with in the course of provision of health care.

Thank you."
