The Vice Chancellor’s Address To First Year Students On Friday, September 5th, 2014 At The Graduation Square.

"All the Deputy Vice Chancellors Present,

Members of the University Management Board,

Senators,

Other University Staff,

Students,

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen

Good morning!

It gives me great pleasure and honor to be part of this special occasion as we formally receive and welcome you into the MMUST family. To the first year students, I believe this day will forever be engraved in your minds as it marks the very first step of an important phase of your lives.

Allow me to note that you are among the very privileged few to have been admitted into a public University. As the French would say, you are the crème de la crème. This opportunity must not be taken for granted considering the efforts that you put into your studies to enable you to clinch this coveted chance.

As you embark on your first year at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, be open-minded and willing to learn and adapt to a new way of life. In primary and secondary school you had to operate under tight supervision from your parents and teachers. Here, in the University, things are totally different. You are expected to manage the apparent freedom that is at your disposal responsibly. The choices you make today and the values by which you will choose to live by during your stay here as a student will determine whether or not you will succeed in your life.

You are also expected to manage your time wisely and approach your studies with a sincere desire of ultimately becoming a better person. Over the years, a good number of students have left with nothing to show after their stay in the University. This has been attributed to lack of focus, wrong choice of friends and failure to manage time.

Always bear in mind that you joined this University alone and you do not share your registration number with anyone. Be proactive and get a grip on what you want to achieve during your stay here. Set your goals clearly in the first weeks of your stay in this University. Your goals and how you purpose to achieve them will determine your future.

The University has an established mentoring system that offers you an opportunity to tap into reservoirs of knowledge and experience in all spheres of life. Do not operate in isolation but always seek guidance. Our Academic division has highly qualified personnel who are willing and ready to steer in attaining the knowledge and skills that you require. Feel free to consult and share with them any problems that may encounter in your study programmes.

MMUST has put structures in place that should help you to achieve your objectives. It is my hope that the extensive orientation exercise that you have gone through since your arrival here has helped you in familiarizing yourselves on how we operate here. Make use of these structures to make your stay at this University more enjoyable.

This is not to say that you will not meet challenges. Far from it! Life is like a river. Remember that a river has fresh water, fish and debris. Cultivate the ability to discern the good from the bad. During your stay at the University, you will meet people who may not have your interests at heart. It is your primary responsibility to decide what to do about that.

Allow me to go biblical and quote the Bible. “Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are”. Take care not to join ‘friends’ who will lead you astray by recruiting you into self destructive habits that can lead to your downfall. Habits such as alcohol and drug abuse have continued to contribute to students’ failure. Keep good company that will give you an opportunity to share knowledge and enhance you self- esteem.

May I also caution you that social life has its good and bad. Hopefully, we are all aware about the killer scourge, HIV and AIDS. You will be taught further about this to add to the information you already have. Protect yourself and seek guidance if you have to take your relationships to other levels. Take the earliest opportunity to get informed advice from our Health department and Guiding and Counseling department before you do anything that you might regret for the rest of your life.

The MMUST family is drawn from people of diverse backgrounds. Learn to co-exist harmoniously with fellow students, lecturers, other staff and our surrounding community. I urge you to be vigilant and aware of potential trouble makers, lest you fall prey to their machinations. Always remember that at MMUST we have the students’ interests at heart and operate under an open door policy. Feel free to consult over anything you have.

Lastly, I would like to assure you that you have joined a University that will provide you with a conducive environment for you to achieve your dreams. Once more KARIBUNI SANA MMUST."
