A section of MMUST staff took part in an extremely interactive three-day Workshop with the theme ‘Grant Proposal Writing and Graduate Student’s Supervision’ from 21st to 23rd October 2015 facilitated by the University of Venda Director of Research and Innovation Prof. George Ekosse.

Prof. Ekosse, a prominent researcher and Secretary-General of the African Academy of Sciences has won several research grants and authored/co-authored over 240 publications which include 121 publications in refereed journal articles.

A number cutting-edge research skills were discussed during the Workshop. Prof. Ekosse encouraged scholars to regularly update their knowledge and not stick to obsolete knowledge. “Aim to publish works worth citing and cease from writing ordinary papers. As an academician, research and innovation is primary. I encourage you to set the pace and be at the fore front of research ahead of your fellow colleagues and students,” he said. 

The Scholar also urged MMUST staff at all cadres to develop their research since universities are ranked according to research output, “Your research should have an impact on the economy and public policy. It will improve your positive visibility,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, (PR&I), Prof. Egara Kabaji said that MMUST aims to distinguish itself as a university of Research and Innovation. “Many members of staff at MMUST have great ideas and from this workshop, I am sure winning proposals will be born,” said Prof. Kabaji.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, (A&SA), Prof. Josephine Ngaira expressed her excitement on the collaboration between MMUST and the University of Venda. “I am positive that through this Mega Workshop, our lecturers will not only horn their supervision skills but also bring out innovative, hands-on research that will help Kenya achieve its Vision 2030,” said Prof. Ngaira.

The Director, Research and Extension, Prof. Judith Achoka, encouraged participants to take research seriously. “Research is the core business of a University. We should aim to publish in credible journals that are relevant to the current generation,” said Prof. Achoka.

The Director, DIAL, Prof. Elizabeth Abenga encouraged MMUST staff to embrace linkages and internationalization and to take advantage of global opportunities that abound. 

A number of grant proposal topics were developed during the Workshop.
