Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is set to open a new campus at Benga, Butula Constituency. This was disclosed after Butula Member of Parliament Hon. Michael Aringo Onyura held a consultative meeting with Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Egara Kabaji on Friday 9th October, 2015 at the Main campus, Kakamega.

During the meeting it was agreed that an MOU would be signed between MMUST and Butula on 20th November 2015 where the Butula community will be represented by Butula CDF Committee who have been spearheading the proposal.

A number of Certificate, Diploma and Undergraduate courses will be offered at the new campus. Hon. Onyura thanked MMUST for the partnership, “I thank this University for its willingness to work with Butula community. I look forward to having an interactive campus at Butula that will empower the community and actively involve them in various activities through extension programmes.”

The MP assured MMUST that the Butula constituency community will provide the necessary support to make the campus a success. He expressed his satisfaction with the proposed programmes that would be offered in the campus. “These programmes are relevant and practical and reflect the needs of our community,” Hon. Onyura noted.

Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Egara Kabaji commended the community for coming up with such an idea. He suggested that Benga be branded as MMUST-TVET campus.

“Campuses brand along certain strong points. I suggest that we brand Butula Campus as a Technical, Vocational, Education and Training (TVET) campus of MMUST that will promote technology and help Kenyans to improve their skills.”

Prof. Kabaji hinted that Butula Campus will provide skill-oriented short courses in order to empower the community and also attract the older generation to register for these courses at the campus. He also thanked Butula MP, Hon. Onyura for his support and praised the infrastructure that the MP had set up in Butula Constituency for the campus. The Co-ordinator of TVET, Mr Henry Wati, noted that Butula campus should provide Competence Based Education Training (CBET) programmes as a way of empowering the community.

Other members present in the meeting were The Director, PSSP, Mr. Dishon Wanjere, Community Liaison Officer, Mr. Oscar Waswa, MMUST Documentalist, Mr. Joseph Nyamulu and Mr. Joel Ogutu, a member of the Committee.
