The Council Chairman Masinde Muliro University Council Dr David Nyamwaya representing Council members and the Vice Chancellor Prof. Fred Otieno representing Management visited the Chancellor H.E. Hon. Mwai Kibaki on Tuesday, 25th August 2015 to brief him on the state of the University in preparation for the 10th Graduation Ceremony scheduled for Friday 4th December 2015.

The Chancellor Hon. Kibaki highly-praised the University Management for the efforts put in and goals achieved in providing excellent university education and training. The Chancellor also promised to assist in looking for a solution to the Engineering problem. “We must focus on improving the equipment that we have in our Engineering laboratories. No country has developed and industrialized without taking a keen interest in Engineering,” the Chancellor observed.

The Chancellor challenged the University to work on specific strategies to raise funds for infrastructure and equipment. The University has so far finalised the third Strategic Plan 2015/16-2019/20 that is projected to cost Kshs 12.4 billion in the next five years. 

To get this amount of money, plans are underway to develop proposals for funding by international partners through and international partners in Japan, China and Germany. Hon. Kibaki promised that through his office he would offer full support in networking and sourcing of funds based on the practical strategies identified in the proposals. 

On matters of security, the Chancellor challenged the University to explore ways of dealing with emerging security and terrorism threats especially by working with the communities. He appreciated the steps taken by the University to curb insecurity by organizing an International Conference on Security in June 2015. 

Presenting the Report, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Fred Otieno emphasised the University commitment to improve its infrastructure and provide a conducive environment for students to gain knowledge. The Vice Chancellor also emphasized the University dedication to embrace its corporate social responsibility role to benefit the community and open links that will help the University achieve its set targets. 

The Vice chancellor was happy that the process of accreditation of engineering programmes by the Engineers Regulatory Board is going on well and any bottlenecks are being urgently looked into. 

The Chairman MMUST Council Dr. David Nyamwaya applauded the University Management for their good work and encouraged them to make the University truly competitive. 

“We must be prepared to take Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology to the next digital level by tackling issues holistically,” Dr Nyamwaya noted.

Others in attendance during the Visit included Prof Nick Wanjohi and Mr Wang’ombe of the Office of the Third President of the Republic of Kenya.
