Prof. Hassan Were of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology on Thursday, 23rd July, 2015 presented a paper in a Public Lecture organized by the Department of Biological Sciences, with the issue of genetically-modified foods dominating the plenary session.
The public lecture with the theme, “Food production challenges in Kenya: A case of potato, cassava and legumes“, brought together experts and scholars from different faculties.
Prof. Hassan Were dismissed the claims that genetically modified foods are hazardous to human health presenting a case study of the United States of America where GMOs have made the Country a food secure nation for over three decades.
 “The USA has been using genetically modified foods for more than 30 years. We cannot say that this has been the main cause of cancer.  No food, be it genetically modified or not causes cancer,” Prof. Were argued.
Dr. Gordon Nguka, a nutritionist by profession, insisted that all foods are secure depending on the consumption patterns. “Let me assure you that all the foods we eat are not safe. The Genetically Modified Foods therefore cannot be claimed to be harmful. It was propaganda by the politicians,” said Dr. Nguka.
According to Dr. Nguka, a lot of research has been done and a number of papers published which support the use of GMOs. He also invited the participants to the Department of Nutrition Science for more insights about the genetically-modified foods.
The Dean Faculty of Education and Social Sciences, who was also the Chair of the session, Dr. Judah Ndiku expressed his gratitude to those who turned up for the lecture. He further urged them to ensure that they attend such events to achieve one of the core objectives of disseminating information.
