The 8th Graduation Ceremony of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, which was held on 25th July 2014, was marked with pomp 

and color when 1,704 graduands gathered at the Graduation square for award of Diplomas and conferment of Degrees by the Chancellor former President of the Republic of Kenya Hon. Mwai Kibaki.The Chancellor noted the contribution of the University towards nation building by contributing trained and skilled graduates to the job market. He congratulated the graduands and urged them to be steadfast in their endevours as they join the job market. 

He was delighted by the support the Government is giving the University through the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology. ‘Part of this support is facilitation towards the enhancement of Sciences and Engineering courses,’ he noted.

He applauded efforts made by the University in diversification of research pointing out the mushroom, stingless bees and Malaria Research projects. The Chancellor said this would see the University becoming a centre for knowledge generation and technological advancement in the region.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Science and Technology Hon. Jacob Kaimenyi in a speech read on his behalf by the representative of the Ministry to the University council Mr. David Watene, sad that the Government is committed to improving the quality of education in the institutions of higher learning. He was happy to note that MMUST has embraced issues of quality assurance by becoming an ISO 9001: 2008 certified institution.

The Chairman of the council Dr. David Nyamwaya expressed the uniqueness of this years’ graduation and attributed it to the fast tracking of the graduation. He pointed out that MMUST will in 2014 be holding two graduation ceremonies. “This is done with the realization that in the 21st century, time is of essence and hence wastefulness and keeping would-be graduands waiting for long before they graduate is unnecessary,” he said.

Dr. Nyamwaya said that MMUST is taking its rightful place and positioning itself as one of the best universities in the production of knowledge by prioritizing research and innovation.The Vice Chancellor Prof. Fredrick Otieno thanked the Chancellor for accepting to serve the University in the same capacity since inception and noted his continued support towards the growth of the University.

He added, MMUST has opened up investment opportunities for the local and regional investors, as part of its initiative to develop and make Kakamega a hub of economic activities in the region. He said this is achievable through partnership with the County Government.

MMUST is in the process of organizing the 9th Graduation Ceremony which will be held later in the year.
