Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is one among few universities that offer unique courses especially at the Centre for Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (CDMHA).

Speaking during the opening ceremony for the Universities exhibitions held at Poa Place in Eldoret on 27th March 2014, Principal Secretary Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Dr. Belio Kipsang, said courses offered at CDMHA, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology should help in solving problems facing Kenya and the global village.

He commended MMUST (CDMHA) for introducing the courses but challenged the intellectuals behind the Programmmes to come up with strategies to actively incorporate the programmmes in nation building.

He added that in order to achieve quality education in the higher education sector, there is need to integrate public and private universities as well as open up the universities to the public. He said universities should play a major role in helping the country achieve her Vision 2030 and this can be done through engagement of students as partners.

The Chief Executive Officer of Commission for University Education (CUE), Prof. David K. Some was optimistic that the challenges facing universities such as staff industrial strikes, will be looked into in order to allow for the steady growth of higher education in the country.

He noted that the university sector is not divorced from the problems faced in the country. One of biggest challenges is the current wage bill. He asked the academia to come clean about this issue and give directions while at the same time ensuring that they do not compromise quality. He urged the Universities to compare their services with the rest of the world and make use of available opportunities.

Henry Thairu, the Chairman Commission for Higher Education (CHE) said that the exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on the achievements in higher education. He pointed out that what is offered at universities should come out clearly and issues of the enrolment ratio be looked into with a clear interest of the students.

On his part, the Deputy Governor Uasin Gishu County, Hon. C.Kiprotich urged the government to increase funding for universities to make them accessible, competitive and attractive to avoid losing students to Universities abroad.
