cueThe Cabinet Secretary for Education Dr. Fred Matiang’i has asked all stakeholders in university education in Kenya to seek innovative solutions to challenges facing universities. Addressing participants and exhibitors during the opening ceremony of the 15th CUE Exhibition for Universities in Nairobi, Dr Matiang’i pointed out that the problems facing Universities are lesser than the opportunities and these only require Universities to optimize their potential.

The CS further highlighted some solutions to the many challenges being faced by Universities. These solutions include, starting an Open University of Kenya which would partly enhance the School-Based programmes currently on offer, strengthening the mandate of the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), having a strong and sound University Funding Board, strengthening the regulatory function of the Commission of University Education (CUE) through constant engagement in standards development. “We also need a new order with regard to the Kenya School of Education,” the CS noted. Dr Matiang’i also proposed more training for senior university managers in addition to encouraging autonomy in the universities while making the Government’s mandate facilitative than inhibitive.
Prof Oduor, Vice Chancellor, Technical University of Kenya, speaking on behalf of other Vice Chancellors challenged the Vice chancellors to ensure standards are maintained since this was the main mandate that will enable the Ministry to support this category of tertiary education.

Higher Education PS Prof Collete Suda reported that the CUE quality audit of universities exposed so many challenges that required the players within the industry to do a major reflection. “Some transformation was really key to return the university education to the high standards that once existed,” Prof Suda said.
The theme for the 15th exhibition was “Positioning universities in innovation, entrepreneurship and technology transfer in the digital era”. Some of the masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology innovations were featured live on mainstream Kenyan media.

The exhibition ran from 27th February 2017 to 3rd March 2017.
