The Inaugural Agri – Expo exhibition that took place ton Friday, 5th May, 2017 at the MMUST Milimani farm will now be an annual event in the MMUST Calendar. This was announced by DVC, Planning Research and Innovation, Prof. William Shivoga on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. FAO Otieno while addressing farmers, exhibitors, staff and students.

Prof. Shivoga urged farmers to modern farming techniques which will ensure that they reap maximumly from their input. He related good farming practices to the all green MMUST farm where crops were planted during the dry season but survived the harsh weather conditions because of care.

He called on farmers to diversify agricultural practices by embracing farming of indigenous crops which are resistant to harsh weather conditions. He told challenged farmers to enroll for courses in Agriculture and Veterinary at MMUST so as to keep abreast with the emerging farming technology.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Kulati Wangia, CEC Agriculture, Kakamega County, thanked MMUST for integrating the society by hosting the exhibition to benefit farmers from across the County and beyond. Wangia said the County government will continue to support initiatives by likeminded partners that are geared towards food security in the County.

Wangia said the County government is working in partnership with other stakeholders to eradicate the army worm menace that has the capacity to negate the gains made in the agriculture sector. He added that the County government had rolled out a fertilizer program to help farmers get better yields from their farms.

Wangia noted that the Kakamega County climate is appropriate for horticulture and urged farmers to venture into horticulture as a business.

The County Director of Agriculture, Mr. Johnston Imbira who was also present underscored the need to create new technologies that should be adopted by farmers for improved yields and thanked all stakeholders for their concerted efforts in eradicating the army worm menace.

Over 30 exhibitors who included seed companies, input companies, livestock companies and machinery companies exhibited their ware to over 2000 farmers drawn from across the county. The exhibition whose theme was Diversifying Agricultural practices to maximize productivity and ensure Food Security in the Region was sponsored by MMUST in collaboration with Savistine Company Ltd and the County government of Kakamega.
