IMG 20180320 WA0010The Kenya Society for Sports Medicine (KSSM) has appointed Dr. Peter Bukhala of MMUST as Vice Chairman. Dr. Bukhala of the Department of Health Promotion and Sports Science has been instrumental in the formation of KSSM. This society includes a wide range of professionals such as medical doctors, physiotherapists, sports scientists, athletic trainers and coaches.

The formation of KSSM was triggered upon realisation that many of the sports injury management programmes are not well coordinated and sometimes not based on current best practices. KSSM aims at coordinating the programmes and trainings to ensure appropriate practices are entrenched. Ultimately, KSSM will bring together all practitioners from the East African region under one umbrella. Upon acceptance of his appointment, Dr. Bukhala said “This is a challenge and as a leader of KSSM I will ensure that our current linkages will enable us strengthen Sports Medicine across the region”.

Already, trainings have been conducted in a collaborative workshop with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) at MMUST in October 2017. KSSM also recently organized the 1st International Sports Medicine Conference, March 2018 in Nairobi. In addition, plans are underway for establishment of the Sports Medicine Centre at MMUST to coordinate research and training.

MMUST runs academic programmes in Sports Science, Health Promotion and Physical Education, spanning from certificate, diploma, bachelors, masters to doctorate levels. The university also provides short courses in the related fields. Recently, a gym facility worth KES 30 million was launched to support Sports Medicine programs in MMUST (Photo: Dr. Peter Bukhala with ACSM President Prof. Walt Thompson of USA).

3Following an inspiring address from the Deputy Vice Chancelors to the University freshmen on Monday, 25th September, 2017, the Vice Chancellor’s speech Prof. Eng. Fred Otieno’s speech to the Freshers marked the climax of the first years’ orientation for the 2017/2018 academic year.
The event that took place on Tuesday 26th September, 2017 at the Graduation Square, Main Campus began with an introduction to the Freshers by the Ag. Registrar (Academic Affairs) Dr. Carolyne Onyancha of the University Directors, Deans, Chairs of Department, the Finance Officer and Librarian among the members of the MMUST academic fraternity.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Students Affairs) Prof. Josephine Ngaira who introduced and invited the Vice Chancellor to address the freshmen gave an outline of the Vice Chancellor’s biodata, his education and administrative background and the various achievements acquired over time. “You need to be inspired by such a wonderful CV,” the DVC (A&SA) urged the First years students.

In his speech, the MMUST Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eng. Fred Otieno welcomed the first year students to the University of Choice. “You have come to MMUST from far and wide on a journey that will hopefully change the rest of your life. Let us wipe out our differences, respect others’ views and cultivate values that will make this University the preferred University of Choice, ” Prof Otieno said. He urged the Freshers to maintain a positive attitude, make a difference, own MMUST and observe its values, build a culture that will be envied in the Country and thus, leave a legacy that will be spoken of with great pride.
The Vice Chancellor also emphasized to the students that the University encourages holistic growth and advised them to spice their academics with co-curricula activities for them to be all-round individuals. “MMUST is a University that recognises talent,” the VC pointed out.
He further noted that the University is student-centred and welcomed the students to embrace hard work in all their endeavours.

He warned the students that while a lot of freedom comes with being in the University, there is need for them to shun behaviour that would cause destruction, violence, drug and alcohol abuse and illicit sexual practices. He observed, “HIV/Aids is real!” further reminding the students to focus on the critical reasons for coming to University and advised them to seek counsel from the Dean of Students Dr Bernadette Abwao in case they faced any challenges.
He asked the students to be team players and assured them that the University Staff at MMUST is qualified, capable, committed and willing to support them. He requested the students to respect all staff members and consult them from time to time.

Finally, he noted that the students needed to remain non-political.
