Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) will be the first university in the world to have a virtue center, a project that is aimed at creating a culture of character and caring in learning institutions, inspiring excellence and ethics in work place, training self-help groups, rescuing children from early marriages by taking them back to school and supporting them to achieve their goals.

Speaking at MMUST on 18th February, 2016, the master facilitator Patricia Crossely said that the virtue group has agreed with the MMUST management and has been allowed to construct a virtue center within the institution. She added that they have all required material such as banners, posters and finance to establish the center, and that they are waiting to be allocated space.

This project is not only aimed at improving the welfare of MMUST students and staff but is also expected to benefit the general community including primary and secondary schools, and teachers no longer use corporal punishment in students, a method which has led to rapid academic improvement. A good number of students have been trained and are going to be awarded certificates. The traineesincluded student leaders, chairpersons of different clubs and students from the faculties of Education and nursing students.

The virtue project was started 25 years ago by 3 founders; Lindah Carlpin Papa, her husband Dan Papa and her brother John Carplin in Canada. This is after the realization that many young people were joining bad company and getting into drugs. Up to now, the group have been able to bring peace and has made girls to know their rights and become assertive.

Patricia Crossely, during a seminar with the Education and Nursing students, emphasized that student leaders should always use the virtue of respect and humility in their daily lives and discipline system. She said “corporal punishment is not the best way of disciplining students”.
