“Busia Campus will be one of the main MMUST Campuses in the not-so-distant future.” This is according to President of the MMUST Student Governing Council (SGC) Mr. Osundwa Kassim Bakari in his address to comrades at the Busia MMUST Campus on 11th of November 2015. The Busia Campus student representative, Mr. Jackson Poipoi asserted that MMUST is not only a major institution of higher learning but also a key player in the socio-economic development of Busia County.

Ms. Peris Orodi, a student representative pursuing Diploma in Social Work and Community Development at Busia Campus observed, “Although the Campus is less than one year old, it has shown great potential of growing into an international institution, considering its proximity to the larger East African region.”

Hon. Patrick O. Ombo, Member of County Assembly (MCA) Amukura Central Ward who is pursuing Diploma in Social Work and Community Development at the Campus encouraged other leaders in the Western region to unite and support the growth of MMUST in Busia County. “Many youth with good grades fail to pursue university education, because for a long time, universities have been located hundreds of miles away. This partly makes education very expensive for our people,” said Hon. Ombo.

The problem of youth radicalization, an issue which has been on the rise in Kenya, was one of the issues discussed. According to one of the students, Mr. Hassan Mohammed, “It would be important for the Vice Chancellor and the University Management to support the development of youth de-radicalization programmes among the communities where the University has a presence”.

Accompanying the SGC Team were the Assistant Student Counsellor, Milka Aswa Muthoni and Rose Aono, of the Office of the Dean of Students. The SGC Team comprised the Director Security and Accommodation John Bosco Ogutu, Director, Clubs and Societies James Omondi Okumu, and Mr. Bonface Otieno, Member of ‘I Choose Life (ICL)’.
