Launch of MMUST Kakuma Campus & Graduation Celebration-2016

Kakuma witnessed today the launch of the first tertiary education institution in the sub-County. Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Kakuma campus was oficially opened by the UNHCR KENYA Country Representative, Raouf Mazou, the Chairman of the University Council/Pro-Chancellor, Dr. David Nyamwaya, the Vice Chancellor of MMUST, Prof. Eng. Fred Otieno and the Deputy Governor, Turkana County, Hon. Peter Lokoel.

MMUST which is the first public university to establish its presence  hosted the tenth congregation of graduands at a community centre - the Peace Centre, where 43 refugees and host community students were conferred Diplomas in Education. UNHCR through its partnership with the institution and Lutheran World Federation has developed a one of a kind Teacher Training program since 2010. Through this program over 250 refugee teachers have been trained and awarded Diplomas and Certificates in Education.

Additionally UNHCR further consolidated the partnership with MMUST by enrolling refugee students on the DAFI scholarship program to MMUST campuses across the country. The DAFI scholarship programme is managed by Windle Trust Kenya "This is a significant milestone in our joint efforts to bring higher education opportunities to refugees and host community population," said Mr. Mazou in his speech to the graduands, academic representatives and Government representatives. The launch of the campus complements wider UNHCR efforts to improve access to tertiary education opportunities through advocacy with key stakeholders including donors and partners for increased investment in this sector. The Government representatives present - the Deputy Governor and MP for Turkana West both reiterated the leadership's willingness to support such initiatives and pledged support to MMUST in acquiring additional land to expand the campus and thereby effectively respond to the growing education needs of refugees and host community populations in the County
